FDA Launches Pet Health Widget

Taking steps to be more transparent, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (Silver Spring, Md.) launched a pet health and safety widget that grants users quick access to content on the FDA’s Web site.

The widget, a portable application embedded in a Web page that can be copied onto any other site or blog, links to topics such as how to report a pet food problem, buying animal drugs online and caring for pets in a disaster. The widget allows users to access content on the FDA’s Web site without having to visit it.

“The pet health and safety widget allows users to add a new dimension to their Web site by providing consumers with the latest news and information from the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine,” said Dr. Bernadette Dunham, the center’s director.

The widget has tabs for tips, which highlight pet health and safety articles, and updates, which feature recall notices and veterinary drug news. The FDA will provide content and updates for the widget, available at www.fda.gov/pethealthwidget, so those who post it on their Web sites won’t have to do any technical maintenance.

“Our new pet health and safety widget provides users with information to help them in managing their pet’s health,” said Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, the FDA’s principal deputy commissioner. [February 2010 PET AGE]
