FDA Denies Nutro Investigation
An online article alleging a government inquiry into a popular pet food brand elicited an uncommon response from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration: an official statement denying an investigation.
Consumeraffairs.com on April 20 reported that the FDA had confirmed an agency investigation related to Nutro Products Inc. (Franklin, Tenn.). Eight days later, the FDA released a statement “clarifying that Nutro Products Inc. is not currently under investigation.”
The FDA said in its release that it doesn’t typically confirm or deny the existence of an investigation, but was doing so because “a media report incorrectly concluded and reported that Nutro Products Inc. was the subject of an investigation.”
Consumeraffairs.com, which is not affiliated with any government or other consumer organization, said its Freedom of Information Act request was denied by the FDA based on a pending investigation.
Consumeraffairs.com reported on May 19 that it’s appealing that denial.
The consumer-based Web site stands by its story. [July 2009 PET AGE]
